Hello Farm Friends,
During 2020, The Cutting Veg is dedicating one farmers’ market per month in support of Black agricultural initiatives and organizations doing work to serve marginalized communities. Last month we raised $700+ for FoodShare, at Sorauren Farmers’ Market, and many of you responded to our newsletter by donating to FoodShare as well. THANK YOU!
This month we will be raising money for Black Creek Community Farm (BCCF) at Sorauren Market on August 10th. Come get some veg and support BCCF at the same time!
I remember the first time I visited BCCF. It was the late 2000’s and all I saw was a barren eight acre parcel of land at the corner of Jane and Steeles in Toronto. Now, a dozen years later, BCCF has become a leader in our community. Here are just a few of the amazing ways BCCF has enriched our community this year:
- During COVID-19, BCCF has worked with FoodShare to provide thousands of Emergency Food Boxes to people in need in our community.
- Offered safe, engaging community gathering spaces with their Farm park and on-site programming.
- Directly tackled food insecurity within the Jane and Finch community by growing organic food intensively and providing educational programming for community members.
- Provided a platform for community leaders to lead virtual cooking & preserving workshops during COVID-19.
- Delivered youth workshops and online summer camps for kids in the community about growing veggies, cooking local recipes, caring for bees & making honey.
- Raised money for the Black Women Agricultural Freedom Fund in support of black women working in food justice who were fired from an organization due to anti-black racism.
These are just a few examples of the amazing work BCCF is doing to transform our community. I hope you will take a moment to learn more about Black Creek Community Farm. I also hope you will support BCCF by becoming a Black Creek Insider and/or by MAKING A DONATION.
Thank you to all of you who are working each day to end racism and to build an ethical, sustainable food system
Keep Livin’ on the Veg!
Daniel
